Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is a two-number measurement of your heart's function (for example: 120/80 mmHg).

The top number is the systolic pressure, or the pressure of the blood within the vessels as your heart contracts.

The bottom, or diastolic, number is the pressure of blood between the heartbeats, or when your heart rests and refills.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute sets the target range at less than 120 mmHg (systolic)/80 mmHg (diastolic), commonly written as 120/80 mmHg.

High Blood Pressure or Hypertension

When the systolic pressure reaches 140 mmHg or higher, or when the diastolic pressure reaches 90 mmHg or higher, hypertension, or high blood pressure, is diagnosed (for example: 140/90 mmHg).

Do you have high blood pressure?

A Continuing Study on high blood pressure is being conducted by the Academic Dean (Principal Investigator) and Student Interns (Student Investigators) at the Eastern School of Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine in Montclair, New Jersey. Eastern is New Jersey's first school of acupuncture.

Outline of Study

The length of the study will be a total of 4 weeks. After preliminary screening, prospective participants will be asked to make an appointment at the Student Clinic located in Montclair, NJ to undergo a final qualification interview. Those persons who meet all of the qualification requirements will enrolled into the study group and will be scheduled to receive acupuncture treatments for 4 consecutive weeks. The weekly treatments will require a 1 hour commitment every week to be scheduled during the Student Clinic hours. There will be no charge for the treatments.

Enrollment for the Acupuncture to treat high blood pressure study is from April 2010 through November 2010.

Requirements

To be included in the study you must be between the ages of 18 – 99 years of age, who have high blood pressure (systolic reading must be over 130 mmHg). Any individual with systolic blood pressure over 180 mmHG or lower than 95 mmHg may be excluded from the study. If there is a difference between the systolic and diastolic of 60 mmHg or more, that individual may be excluded from the study.

Any participant on PRN drug “drugs used as needed” that are known to have an effect on blood pressure may be excluded from the study. For example: PDE5 inhibitors, H2 antagonist, NSAID’s, amphetamines, Ritalin, corticosteroids, hormones (including birth control pills), migraine medications, cyclosporine, erythropoietin and many over-the-counter medications that contain pseudo ephedrine and ephedrine (such as allergy, cold, asthma and appetite suppressants medications). The above medications will be acceptable if not taken on a PRN basis.

Co-morbidities affecting blood pressure (diabetes, heart failure, renal failure or any other secondary causes of hypertension) may cause an individual to be excluded from the study.

Any missed treatment or lateness that is not rescheduled within the same week may disqualify the person from participating in the study. Any change in the participant’s medical condition or a change in medications at any point during his/her participation in the study may disqualify him/her from the study. The use of caffeine or smoking three hours prior to a treatment may also disqualify the participant from the study. The subject may be excluded from the study if he/she had any acupuncture treatment for high blood pressure within three months. Pregnancy will also be a basis for exclusion from the study. If a woman becomes pregnant during the study, she will be removed from the Pilot Study.

If a patient needs any emergency medical attention he or she will be advised to seek immediate medical attention.

Ethnicity is not a consideration in this study.

Noncompliance with study rules including missing appointments or study termination will also remove participants from the study.
